Fri-Sun, March 5-7. Homebrew and Hiking Weekend. Join us for 2 days of exploring the backcountry sections of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Depending on the conditions we'll hike or snowshoe to the various ponds and/or waterfalls in the DWNRA. Friday night there will be an intro to home brewing with samples of the various styles of beer. Saturday we'll bottle a batch during happy hour, while sampling the same brew made two weeks before. If you're a home brewer and would like to participate and share some of your work, please contact Kathy Scranton. Fee $127/M, $140/NM includes 2 nights lodging, 2 breakfasts and Sat happy hour & dinner. Activity fee for brewing materials is $20.00 payable Friday night. Fri-Sun., Mar 12-14. Acting for Singles Weekend. Bring out your inner actor "acting weekend" for Singles. Actress and drama teacher "Narani O" will lead the group in acting and improvisational exercises that will loosen one up and get us into acting. On Sat., after a morning hike we will continue with the acting exercises and maybe some scripted scenes. Participants will be able to take risks in a safe and non-judgmental environment. On Sat. night, we can entertain each other by "performing" some scenes. For beginners and academy award winners alike. Fri-Sun., Mar 19-21. SOLO Wilderness First Aid. The WFA course will teach you how to deal with common medical incidents and accidents that occur in the backcountry. It stresses safety, preparation, crisis avoidance, and the treatment of problems such as blisters, sprains, hypothermia, heat disorders, protection from the elements and more. This course provides an important level of understanding about recognizing and treating medical emergencies or injuries. and also discusses long-term patient care, a reality of backcountry travel. The WFA is a 16-hour course and can be used to re-certify a WFR level of training. CPR certification can be obtained for $35.00 during the course. Please inform the staff at Mohican if you desire this training prior to course start date. L SOLO. Fri.-Sun., Apr 2-4. Rails to Trails Hiking Weekend. Join us for a weekend of hiking on old rail lines converted into hiking trails. One day will be spent hiking the Lackawanna Cutoff from Blairstown, NJ to Portland, PA, which will cross two cement viaducts. The next day will be spent hiking the "Lehigh & New England" rail line from Columbia to Blairstown, NJ. Car shuttles will be provided each day. Mason Logie will give a history of each rail line. Fri.-Sun., Apr 16-18. Irish Song and Dance Weekend. Join us for a weekend of Irish music and dance. Noel Cotter will teach Irish set and ceili dancing with Gina Carmody and Dan Hunt, leading us in music and song. Bring your dancing shoes, instruments and hiking boots. Fri.-Sun., Apr 30 - May 2. AMC Spring Fling. AMC's second annual Spring Fling clubwide event at the Mohican Outdoor Center. Join your AMC friends from near and far for this fun-filled weekend featuring various hikes along and around the AT, a visit to a local wolf preserve where you can see wolves and other animals in a natural setting, enjoy a few hours paddling on Catfish Pond (canoes, kayaks and all gear provided!), and of course, making S'mores around the campfire. A variety of guided activities for you to choose from will be provided throughout the weekend, and all meals are included, too. AMC members and non-members (families, too!) are invited. Bring your favorite musical instrument and join Mohican's own band Saturday night in playing the classics and a few originals. This will be the first time that all twelve chapters will come together just to relax and have fun - no meetings, no business agenda, just a chance to get acquainted with fellow outdoor enthusiasts from all over the northeast. Fri.-Sun., May 7-9. Glorious Spring Birding Weekend. Let's see how many species we can count while wandering in the glorious spring woods around Mohican at the height of the spring migration. Orioles, Tanagers and warblers for sure. Beginner birders very welcome. Instruction in birding basics will be given. This may be the beginning of a lifelong pleasure. Fri.-Sun., May 7-9. Rock Climbing for Beginners. This two-day program introduces you to basic rock climbing and "top-roping" techniques. The goal of this course is to offer the first time climber (or experienced climbers who would like to learn more about the technical side of climbing systems and climbing techniques) the information and skills that allow you to become comfortable on the rock. By focusing on the skills needed to become a self-sufficient rock climber, our aim is to bring you closer to a level of understanding of climbing that enables you to continue to climb on your own. Instruction covers climbing techniques, belaying skills, anchors, rappelling, climbing equipment (including equipment inspections and limitations) and classic top rope setups. Fri.-Sun., May 14-16. Intro to Digital Outdoor Photography Weekend. This course is designed for the beginning digital photographer. Topics covered will include composition, how to use digital camera features, optimizing the image in Adobe Photoshop Elements, and making the print. Participation Optional. In this course, put your map and compass skills to work and build confidence as you experience real-life bushwhacking and triangulation situations in indoor and outdoor exercises.
