Ways You Can Volunteer
Here's a list of some of the things you can do to help.
- You can join us on a group trailwork trip. See the list above for the
current schedule. There are opportunities in several locations including
Nockamixon State Park (near Quakertown, PA),
Valley Forge National Historic Park (new King of Prussia, PA),
and The Appalachian Trail (in the Lehigh Valley - North of Bethlehem, PA).
- You can volunteer to help take care of a section of the AT or side trails.
Our clubs area of the AT is between Wind Gap and Little Gap, 15 miles, which
we divide up into 2 miles sections, plus the Delps and Katellen side trails.
This usually involves brushing back in May and June when it grows in fast, and
repainting blazes when they start to fade. Some sections need a little string
trimming in late june, but most are ok. There is a booklet from ATC which explains the
standards about how the trail is maintained.
Side trails and steep areas also have problems with erosion. If a section
of trails is becoming eroded we'll try to get a group together to work on it.
- Corridor monitoring - Hiking the NPS boundaries of the AT and checking and
refreshing the blazes for the AT corridor. This involves hiking off-trail (bushwhacking)
and is usually done when there is no foliage or snow on the mountain.
- Shelter watch/care. Pat Sacks takes
care of organizing the shelter watch. Shelter watch involves going up to the
Leroy Smith shelter to check on the conditions and do some chores
around it to keep it clean and nice.
- Sign work. Making new signs and repairing/replacing old ones.
We try and keep track of the time spent on trailwork for various annual
reports to organizations such as AMC, ATC, KTA.
